TÜV SÜD Korea and Visionplus jointly hold the 2nd Offshore Wind Energy Seminar

TÜV SÜD and Visionplus hosted the 2nd Offshore Wind Energy Seminar, focusing on “Basic Design of Fixed Bottom and Floating Offshore Wind Farms”. In its “Renewable Energy 2030” strategy, Korea aims to raise the share of renewable energy in its national energy mix to 20% by 2030. As a result, large-scale offshore wind farms are being actively developed and some projects will progress to basic design stage by 2020.

During the Offshore Wind Energy Seminar of TÜV SÜD Korea and Visionplus, Prof. Young Il Park from Dong-A University, Tony Kim from HYOSUNG Corporation, and Dr Hee-Suk Yoo from Korea Electrotechnological Research Institute (KERI) shared various case studies and development trends for offshore wind farm projects in Korea. In addition, TÜV SÜD experts Alexander Heitmann (Global Business Line Manager Renewable Energy) and Florian Weber (Specialist Energy Yield Assessment) explained the procedure of offshore wind farm project certification. Using various case studies as examples, they pointed out critical issues during the project design phase of wind farms.

TÜV SÜD Korea launched its services for offshore wind energy in Korea in early 2017 with a preliminary feasibility study for the Sinan offshore wind farm in Jeonnam Province. “Since then, we have been supporting various wind energy projects in cooperation with Visionplus”, said Wolfgang Hock, President and CEO of TÜV SÜD Korea. “We will expand and adjust our service portfolio for offshore wind power testing, verification, certification and advisory services and we are looking to cooperate with the industry leaders in Korea.”

TÜV SÜD is a certification body for offshore wind farms approved by the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Its experts have been involved in the majority of German offshore wind-farm projects in recent years and have extensive experience with all types of tests and inspections, expert reports and certifications required within the scope of international wind energy projects.

In Germany, more than one-third of electricity is generated from renewable sources and half of this comes from on- and offshore wind farms, which have been massively expanded in the last 20 years”, explains Reiner Block, CEO of TÜV SÜD’s Industry Service Division. In addition to the certification of wind turbines and farms, a third-party system has been systematically implemented. TÜV SÜD has been involved right from the start of this development as a trusted third party, ensuring high technical quality and reducing risks.

After the seminar, TÜV SÜD hosted a ‘Dinner Reception with Korean Offshore Wind Power Industry Leaders for Successful Energy Transition in Korea’, attended by leading Korean manufacturers and opinion leaders in the wind power industry.
